The Difference Between Fixing Yourself and Finding Yourself

Many of us have spent years trying to improve ourselves. We try harder, push more, and promise to do better—become something better. We read books, take classes, and follow gurus, when what we really want is simply to be kinder, calmer, stronger, and more patient.

There is nothing wrong with growing. But sometimes all that effort can feel heavy, like we are chasing an idea of perfection—an idea of who we think we *Should be.

Finding ourselves, or Self-realization, feels different. It is not about becoming someone new or “new and improved.” It is about noticing who you already are underneath the pressure.

The difference I’m noticing is this: The idea of improving myself often feels like pushing, while finding myself often feels like breathing.

If I sit with it, one seems to come from fear (and all the thoughts that travel with it), and the other comes from a steady truth.

Self-realization does not mean you stop learning or growing. It simply means you begin to grow from a place of honesty rather than pressure.

*There is that word: Should.

We can remove it because the word 'should' quietly turns guidance into pressure, pulling us away from our own inner knowing and into someone else’s rulebook.
